Police in the High Peak are encouraging residents to treat cold calls over security issues with caution.

It is after a number or people across the area have reported being contacted by a company asking about their home security and if they have alarm systems, often linking themselves to the police or claiming they are carrying out a crime survey.

The caller has then offered  to sell a monitored alarm system at a heavily discounted rate, sometimes for as little as one pound, but without explaining the long-term expenses for maintaining and monitoring the alarm, which can cost thousands of pounds.

PC Bob Fox, Crime Reduction Officer for the High Peak and Derbyshire Dales said: “This type of system is not appropriate for the majority of households so my advice is not to buy from these cold callers.

“Don’t give out any personal information and politely put the phone down. If you want the deterrent of an alarm system consider a simpler audible system first”

Similar calls have also been reported to police in the Derbyshire Dales during the past year.

PC Fox added: “If you are considering getting an alarm make sure you research it first; get a quote from at least three reputable companies and find out exactly what you will get for your money.”

Businesses which claim their alarm systems are monitored should be registered with either the National Security Industry (NSI) or the Security Systems Alarm Inspection Board (SSAIB), the independent inspection bodies for alarm companies. 

Companies should be able to prove their registration to these boards, alternatively make checks by contacting the NSI on 01628 637512 or the SSAIB on 0191 296 3242.  

Businesses will also need to be registered with the police, so it is advised that before you sign up, you should ask to see their police agreement form.
