Wool by Water.

It is a good many years since any commercial cargoes of wool where carried by canal into Whaley Bridge, if ever?

For the next couple of days, Friday and Saturday, 6-7th August things are changing as a cargo of wool arrives in Whaley Bridge,

followed by a visit to Buxsworth Basin, on Sunday the 8th on the narrowboat “Patty Ann”.

A Lancashire couple, Colin and Carole Wareing, while cruising on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal up in Yorkshire,

fell into discussions with fellow boaters and knitters and Carole established that there was a need for a service

bringing wool to knitters by water on the inland canals. As knitting has once again become the thing to do,

this is service that has become greatly appreciated as a lot of the traditional wool shops that used to be in every town

and indeed village along the canals of the country have long disappeared.

Carole had quite a stock of wool on board Patty Ann as she designs and creates her own knitwear,

so it didn’t take much to contact a wool producer, J.C.Brett’s and last June Patty Ann took on her 1st cargo of wool

from their warehouses that are situated close to the canal in Bingley, West Yorkshire. They have returned for further cargoes

and also get supplies delivered to them at a convenient bridge or wharf.

What has surprised Colin and Carole was the amount of small villages and towns they moored in where the local land

based knitters really appreciated their wool being brought to them so now they are trying bring wool into the city.

This year Patty Ann, which has become known as “The Wool Boat” is cruising the canals of Cheshire,

Staffordshire and Shropshire, bringing the wool by water, either as wool and yarns for knitters

or as finished garments ranging from fingerless gloves to Boatman’s Ganseys as traditionally worn by the working boatmen

when the canals were the freight arteries of the country.

The boat will be moored in the canal basin at Whaley Bridge to supply a range of wools

from 4 ply through double knitting,

chunky and Aran wools, along with patterns, knitting needles and anything you would need for creating your own garments,

and what Carole doesn’t carry on board she will have a contact for somewhere in the world of wool.

The boat will be open from 11 to 5 daily and all are welcome to come and have a browse

and a look at the Wool on the Water Boat.

If you can’t make it over these dates “Patty Ann” will be in Marple on the following Sunday and Monday.

Carole can be contacted on 07931 356204 to find out where Patty Ann will be over the summer or if you need more information.

Knight in Shining Armour

We have received the following e-mail from a very grateful visitor.

Dear Sirs,

I'm hoping you can help me find a way of thanking a complete stranger for helping me get home on January 2nd 2010.

My name is Diane Hickey and on the above date, I was trying to get back home to my family in Northwich,

Cheshire after spending New Year in Sheffield.

I had set off in good time for my journey after hearing on the travel news that there was chance of snow showers in the North East.

I stopped off in Chaple on le Frith Morrisons to buy screen wash and some provisions but

when I came out it was to find a whole load of thick snow had fallen.

I decided I had no option at this stage other than to continue with my journey as to turn around back to

Sheffield would be unwise due to the snowfall. I left Chapel on le frith with no problems

and my car handled very well until I reached the Macclesfield Road at Whaley Bridge

where my journey came to an end as firstly I got stuck trying to get up the road.

A local resident advised me to turn the car around and try to head back to the A6 which would be safer for me to get home.

However I then ran into further trouble when I lost control on the way back down the road,:

my breaks and hand brake couldn't help me and my car came to a standstill by the side of the road,

where I gave up and tried to ring for help. After a while and me becoming very upset, help arrived in the form of a very nice lady

who tapped on my window after seeing me get into trouble. She enlisted the help of some other locals

and finally it was decided that one of the men, whose name I never found out, offered to try to drive my car

to the bottom of the hill to give me a fighting chance of continuing my journey on the A6 to Stockport

where hopefully the roads would be passable.

Not only did this gentleman take me to the bottom of the hill, but drove me a mile or so to actually join the A6.

He then had such a long walk back to whalley bridge.

So, basically I would love to thank this man, (My knight in shining armour) for rescuing me

and helping me get back safely to my family.

I had survived a serious stroke 2 years previously and so my anxiety levels were very high at the thought of

being stranded miles away from home. If you can think of any way Of reaching this local community

with my eternal thanks it would be very much appreciated.

Yours

A very grateful
Diane Hickey

Whaley Bridge ready to welcome the Rev Cheri from New Zealand

THE Bishop of Chester, the Rt Rev Dr Peter Forster, proposes to license the Rev Cheri Pinner as priest in charge

on a part time basis to the parish of Whaley Bridge in the new year. The parish includes Trinity Church in the town

and St James' at Taxal.

At present, Cheri and John, her husband, live in New Zealand. They are both ordained and technically John will be an assistant curate.

They envisage working closely together.

A statement from Whaley Bridge parish said: "The appointment does have financial implications for the parish,

as Bishop Peter has made it quite clear that we have to meet our parish share quota of £20,000 a year.

"We have no further details at present, except that the parish church council has unanimously accepted the proposal

and announced the news at all

Crowds welcome Christmas to Whaley Bridge

A dry night brought the crowds out in Whaley Bridge to greet the arrival of Santa Claus and see the 2009 Christmas lights

switched on Santa Claus arrived by the narrowboat Barleycorn at the canal basin to be greeted by dozens of children.

He then travelled in the Rose Queen's 'coach' to Footsteps on Market Street.

There a grotto had transformed the basement into a 19th century street.

While hundreds of children waited to see Santa and claim their gift, the public joined in carol singing,

led by Whaley Bridge band and a group of singers from Churches Together, round the tree near the Jodrell Arms.

The lights were switched on by town council chairman Barrie Taylor

The fun was still not over Whaley Bridge's impressive Powderkegs strutted their stuff in front of the Railway pub on Market Street.,

and inside the nearby Mechanics' Institute the Christmas market brought brisk trade,

Churches Together in Whaley Bridge Luncheon Club

Churches Together in Whaley Bridge holds a luncheon club at 12 noon on the last Thursday

of each month at the Uniting Church on Buxton Road in Whaley.

The aim of the club is to provide a warm nutritious two course meal and a friendly meeting place

for older people who live on their own or who need a break now and then – all for just £3.50.

The Club was formed in June 2008 and has proved a great success, welcoming 30+ people

from all walks of life each month. The Town Council very kindly donated £100 to the club

which has been put to good use providing a much needed steamer in which to prepare nutritious veggies

- though these are generally followed by somewhat less virtuous but delicious puds!

If you or anyone you know would like to come to the club, or indeed if you would like to become a volunteer cook

or helper, please ring the Uniting Church on 01663 734479 who will put you in touch with a club member.

The Club has a limited capacity to arrange transport for those who could otherwise be unable to attend.

On behalf of Toddbrook Sailing Club's current Commodore, Rob Wormald, I would like to thank

Whaley Bridge Town Council for their generous grant of £100. This donation has been used to part finance the purchase

of our splendid new rescue boat. Unfortunatly the old one was no longer fit for purpose,

and the new one has cost us several thousand pounds including the new outboard motor.

Obviously in order to keep members and guests to the club safe whilst on the water a good, solid, robust

and speedy craft was of prime importance. The £100 you gave us has helped considerably towards this.

The new boat should give us good service for many years to come.

We like to think that we fly the flag for Whaley Bridge and represent the community at many local,

MOTHER of three Susanne Lomas, with a lifetime of interest in young people, has joined Whaley Bridge town council

as an independent member. She was co-opted as a representative for Yeardsley ward,

following the death of former council chairman Jake Walsh last summer.

Susanne, 58, an administrator with Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council's (Children and Young People’s Directorate),

responded to an advertisement from the town clerk seeking volunteers to fill the vacancy.

Councillors co-opted her to serve until 2011.

Susanne said the reason she applied was "that working in Stockport, I was in danger of losing contact

with the community I love. Friends had said before that I should be a councillor,

and I thought 'I couldn't do that.' When I saw the poster in the post office about the vacancy,

I went straight over to the town clerk's office. I gave it 24 hours' thought, then decided to go for it."

Susanne and her husband Philip have spent all their lives in Whaley Bridge. They went to separate primary schools,

but met as teenagers. They were married 34 years ago in St James', Taxal. The vicar of St James and the Methodist minister

from the now Uniting Church jointly conducted the wedding ceremony – a first in Whaley Bridge.

Susanne has been 13 years in the Stockport education job.

The department works to ensure that government education standards are met in Stockport schools.

After a maternity break bringing up three daughters - two of them twins in their 30s -

Susanne worked in a number of jobs, all youth or education related. They included service as a clerical assistant

at New Mills school, a post as a teaching assistant at Chinley, then a teaching assistant's job in

Whaley Bridge primary school's enhanced resource department.

Susanne had been involved in working with the youth service before and after the children were born.

Before that she was an information desk assistant at Manchester Airport in the 70s.

Susanne has always been interested in young people, as well as older people.

She attends both St James and the Uniting Church.

Susanne is daughter of the late Reg Bennett and Elizabeth Bennett who still lives in Whaley Bridge.

W3 future still in doubt after a decade of success

Whaley Bridge Water Weekend, one of  the town's biggest community events, is still in danger of closing down.

W3's chairman Barrie Walker and secretary James Middleton, who have both announced their intention to stand down,

recently held a meeting with a representative of Goyt Valley Round Table.

The Round Tablers wanted to explore the possibility  of  taking over the event,

but regretfully have decided not to proceed.  However, they promise to assist a new organising group

until a permanent solution is found.

The existing committee has fixed next year's event for Saturday  12 June and Sunday 13 June,

and also made other bookings of acts and attractions  that an incoming group could take over.

Barrie Walker said:  "We appreciate the concern the Round Table  have for W3,

and understand their reasons for not being able to take it over fully.

We remain hopeful that someone will come forward and take the event into a new era.

"The recent public meeting, called by Town Council chairman Barrie Taylor,

was well attended and showed the feelings of local people for the three summer events,

W3, the Rose Queen Carnival and the Welldressing.

All these events, and suggestions for a summer festival to link up with them, had broad support.

We now need to turn this support into a new W3 committee."

W3 2009  was the tenth event, and the best supported during its first decade.

An estimated 1,400 people visited the Canal Basin over the weekend, with nearly 800 taking the free boat trips.

£24,000 green light for park plan
WHALEY BRIDGE Memorial Park has been given the green light to start planning major redevelopments

after getting a Lottery grant of £24,300.
The development funding from the Parks for People programme will allow High Peak Borough Council

to further develop their bid for £478,200 to transform and regenerate the park.

John Haken, the council’s executive councillor for the environment, said:

“We are absolutely delighted for the stage one pass for Whaley Bridge.

This is a significant step towards implementing these exciting plans for the park –

which is one of Whaley Bridge’s most valuable assets.

We will now be working towards another successful outcome at stage two.”

The Park was created in 1920 as a memorial to the 106 local men who died in World War I

and includes a memorial cross which is the focal point of the area.

It has ornamental woodland planting, creating habitats for an array of wildlife.

Regeneration plans include reinforcing the local heritage of the park to remember all those

who lost their lives in two world wars. It will also include the restoration of the war memorial area,

reshape the site as it was originally in the 1920s and preserve the surrounding environment.

Working with local volunteers and residents, the project will encourage mass participation in a wide range of events.

There will also be improvements to the surrounding landscape to ensure the survival of many species of plants

and animals.

£50,000 canal project launched

A £50,000 project, which could bring a bright future for one of Whaley Bridge's largest buildings,

started at a high-powered meeting in January.

Executives from British Waterways, community organisation representatives and council officials,

met to start the process for a major feasibility study into the possible use of the transhipment warehouse at the canal basin.

This is the large, historic building, unused for many years and protected by a Grade II* listing.

British Waterways are the owners, and have led a partnership with local representatives to win

financial support from the East Midland Development Agency.

The £50,000 awarded for the feasibility study is the first stage in possible funding for a multi-thousand pound development,

under EMDA's waterway regeneration programme.

Consultant companies will be asked to come up with plans by this summer to revitalise the strange building -

the canal runs through it, with wharves at the end of the building where boats originally transferred goods to trains.

Parts of the building date back more than 200 years. Last autumn, many local people visited the warehouse during open days

. For some, it was the first time they had seen inside the building.

Among local groups supporting the bid are the Whaley Water Weekend Association,

whose event takes place round the canal basin, the Whaley Bridge Association,

which is about to publish results of a survey into people's views on leisure and community facilities,

and the Amenity Society.

WBA...have your say

Whaley Bridge Association - WBA has been awarded funding to take forward a major community consultation in the town.

The Big Lottery’s Awards For All, will enable the Association to ask local people

what community facilities will be required in Whaley Bridge, now and in the foreseeable future.

WBA hope that this consultation will bring people together in a way that has not happened for many years.

“It is important that we carry out this work now, so that we can recognise the changing needs of Whaley Bridge

and we can begin to offer all the opportunities and services that make a strong community spirit

and build a town that people remain proud to live in”, says Secretary WBA, Jon Taylor.

The consultation will take place this summer, and will seek people’s views at community meetings,

face-to-face interviews, questionnaires and focus groups.

Members of the WBA, who are all volunteers, will be attending the main events in the town and talking to people

where they shop and socialise. This will enable residents to discuss ideas

and gives the opportunity for many people to get involved

and help shape the community facilities that will be so important to Whaley Bridge

Whaley Bridge Sunday School Bi-centenary

2007 is the bi-centenary of Whaley Bridge Sunday School. In 1807 the Wesleyans hired rooms in the village Corn Mil

l in which to hold a Sunday School. The mill proved inadequate, so by 1810 the Wesleyans were meeting,

teaching and worshipping in a building called the Rid Barn. This was situated close to the present day Doctor's Surgery,

hence the street named Chapel Street.

Twenty years later the Wesleyans erected a Sunday School on the present day Buxton Road site

and over a period of forty years added a chapel and enlarged the premises;

which for many years was the Whaley Bridge Methodist Church, Sunday School and the Wesleyan Day School.

To celebrate these events a weekend of activities are planned for mid May - see Events page

FOOTSTEPS

The unique community drop in centre in Whaley Bridge, has received a Big Lottery grant of £112,000

to make major improvements. Work is expected to start in early spring.

Officials, volunteers and supporters celebrated the grant , following months of work in preparing the bid.

Now, with £10,000 which the Footsteps committee is raising,

the centre aims to complete these improvements by next December:

· a renovated basement, where a youth drop in service can be provided
· a lift for wheelchair users and people with mobility problems,

either to the computer room upstairs or the basement
· accessible toilets
· a general 'spruce up' to the building.

High Peak MP Tom Levitt joined volunteers at a 'thank you' party.

He said the centre was a rare example in the High Peak of a community drop in facility.

Among the party guests were George Hill, former owner of the shoe shop

which turned into Footsteps after his retirement,

Nye Rowland company secretary and Jean Horsfall, chair.

Maureen Roberts, shop manager, appealed for more volunteers for Footsteps.

Drop in for information or phone the the centre on 01663 732395 daily from 9.30 to 4.30pm

(12.30pm on Wednesdays and Sundays.)

Footsteps serves 300 people each week. The shop sells 500 books a week.

Hayfield architect John MacCall has designed the changes at Footsteps.

There is a possibility that the centre will have to close for a short time in the summer while some of the work goes on.

· Footsteps organised the successful evening for the Whaley Bridge
Christmas lights switch-on.

The excursion train had started at Milton Keynes with a conventional engine.

At Warrington, engine 44996 and another British Rail standard locomotive

It could be a while before a steam engine comes this way again. Past Time Rail of Lichfield,

Mobile Telephone Mast

East Whaley Bridge Residents’ Association has recently been asked to address concerns from local residents

regarding the proposals for a 15m + high mobile telephone mast

and associated building on the site of the new Whaley Bridge Cricket Club.

Residents are concerned that the land, which already has consent for a two storey pavilion,

will become even further developed and destroying its natural beauty.

The land, owned by the Club, is designated Special Landscape Value

and is also a Derbyshire Wildlife Site.

It is understood that the Club need the mast to provide income for construction of the new pavilion.

If the mast is allowed to proceed it will further degrade this greenbelt area

and encourage other developers to follow suit.

The mobile phone operators are due to make a formal planning application to High Peak Borough Council.

If local residents are equally as concerned the Resident's Association is advising them

to contact the planning department and also their local councillors.

The residents’ association will be holding an open meeting in the Mechanics Institute

in the week commencing 15/03/04 to discuss the impact (date to be advised).

instead of having to travel into major cities. The group, for 23 - 35 year olds,

will meet monthly for casual social activities such as going to the pub, dinner parties and cinema outings.

A spokesperson for Pink Peaks said: "People living in the High Peak area feel secluded

from the gay community, which benefits from convenient venues in major cities such as Manchester and Sheffield.

"For a long time there has been a need to find a way of bringing the sizeable High Peak gay community together,

and we hope the group will provide a solution to that."

The group will get together in areas including Buxton, Stockport, Whaley Bridge, Castleton,

Macclesfield and Manchester.
