Whaley welldressers start making their full size 'flower picture' in a marquee during the Water Weekend (Saturday 17 June and Sunday 18 June). During the following week the group turns a board filled with clay into a dramatic picture, using flower petals and other natural material. The subject for this year remains a secret until 17 June. The blessing of the 'flower picture' takes place on Sunday 26 June at the canal basin. Ethel Hallam, chairman of the welldressers, tells how the idea of miniature boards arose: "Children - and adult visitors - always want to have a go when they see us at our board. We are getting a dozen or so A4 size boards made, just for children to get hands-on experience. "The clay will be the same high quality, from Stoke on Trent, as on the main board. We'll provide a design and give the children some materials. Favourite patterns in the past have been a butterfly or a cat." One material the welldressers will be careful with is dried peas. In the early years, a member of the group used peas, but having baked them at high temperature beforehand. Even so, the peas sprouted overnight after they had been used in the damp clay! Whaley Bridge's welldressing started at the turn of the century. Because of the link with the Water Weekend, pictures have often had a water theme - lifeboats, a river and last year the Battle of Trafalgar. Mrs Hallam recalls the help given to the group by other welldressing centres: "When we were starting, we looked at other people's techniques. Monyash welldressers were especially helpful. Since then, we have helped other villages who have started their own welldressing. Now, through encouraging children, we hope to ensure that this new tradition is firmly part of the community." The Water Weekend -W3 - not only hosts the start of the welldressing preparations, but brings two full days of activities and fun around the canal basin. The welldressing runs from W3 to the town's Rose Queen Carnival a week later. Mrs Hallam can be contacted on 01663 734436.
