AGE 16 & 17 Grant for Employers to Take on Apprentices
Apprenticeship grants of £2,500, announced in the Employment
White Paper Building Britain's Recovery (reported on POLICYfinder),
are now available to encourage employers to take on 16 and
17 year old apprentices.
The AGE 16 & 17 grant is in addition to the costs of
training, which are met by the National Apprenticeship Service
(NAS).
Employers in England who are able to offer a job opportunity
to an unemployed young person aged 16 or 17 are invited to
apply for support. The NAS particularly wants to support small
and medium-sized employers interested in employing an apprentice
for the first time, or wishing to employ an additional apprentice
over their traditional level of recruitment. It can support
larger employers where they can demonstrate that they are
over-training to support smaller employers in their supply
chain/the wider sector or recruiting in excess of their traditional
levels of apprentice recruitment.
Payments will be administered by the NAS through its approved
training provider network. Employers will receive the grants
in two payments - £1,000 when the young person starts
the Apprenticeship and a further £1,500 after three
months.
The NAS will help employers in finding a training provider
to deliver the training programme and to recruit an apprentice.
The initiative is short-term and only available until the
end of March 2010.
