Whaley Bridge Film Group Celebrates Town Council Grant

Whaley Bridge Film Group was set up in June 2010 with the assistance and encouragement of the Whaley Bridge Association by a small team of local volunteers with the purpose of adding to community life in Whaley Bridge.

We were aware that not everyone can or wants to travel into Stockport or Manchester to see a film so we have been showing monthly films locally since then and have also arranged films for the Whaley Water Weekend and other special events.

We show a range of films that will appeal to as wide an audience as possible,  including “Classics”, foreign language films and films made by independent producers which may not make it to local cinemas, as well as more mainstream films.

We have used a number of our film screenings to highlight social issues and to support the work of other community organisations.  For example we used our screening of ‘Painted Boats’ as part of the Whaley Water Weekend in 2012 to raise awareness of the work of the Stockport Canal Boat Trust which provides narrow boat trips for people with disabilities. We have also organised a number of charitable collections for High Peak Nightstop, New Mills Food Bank, Oxfam and the Alzheimer’s Society which have been well supported by our generous film-goers.

The £75 funding from Whaley Bridge Town Council will help to assist towards our aims to:

  • Increase the number of individual film licences (around £100 per licence) that we can purchase which will enable us to advertise these screenings more widely and so reach more local people.
  • Respond to requests for screenings from local groups and to provide Whaley Bridge with a resource that would benefit the community beyond our regular programme of film screenings.

We want to make sure that everyone can attend our screenings so we ask for a suggested donation of only £4 (or £3 concessions) at our screenings.

You can keep informed of all our regular and special screenings by joining our mailing list. Please email your interest to whaleyfilms@hotmail.co.uk

We look forward to welcoming you at one of our screenings soon.
