New park ranger kick starts £478,000 park dream

Paul Evans, new park ranger and gardener at Whaley Bridge Memorial Park, has taken up his job as the £478,000 dream plan for the park near the town centre starts to turn into reality.  Over the next five years the money, granted by the Heritage Lottery Fund, will transform the picturesque, riverside park, which was created in 1920 as a memorial to 109 local men killed in World War I. Drop in at the 24 hour marathon Bible reading

MEMBERS of the parish of Whaley Bridge are taking part in a unique, 24 hour Bible reading in St James’ church, Taxal, on Monday 25 July.  All the passages read will be from the King James version of the Bible, celebrating its 400th anniversary in 2011. Many people consider this edition of the Bible contains some of the most beautiful words in the English language.

Daniel’s Light aims for £200,000

John and Joyce Shacklock from Furness Vale, who set up the charity Daniel’s Light to help fight leukaemia, the disease which killed their only child Daniel, have sent this report and their thanks :

Dear friends of the late Arthur Jackson, it is with love and affection we remember a wonderful and special gentleman.  John and I thank David (Arthur’s son) and his family for their kind thoughts in remembering Daniel’s Light  for Arthur’s memorial service and the donations to the charity.

Vets staff raise £700 in Race for Life

THREE members of staff at Knox and Devlin vets practice in Whaley Bridge ran in the sponsored Race for Life at Tatton Park to raise about £700 for  Cancer Research.  Hannah Bennett, a vet and  vet nurses Charlotte Turpie and Emma Hallam were joined by Hannah’s sister, also in the picture, as an individual runner.  Emma’s dog Ralph also ran in the race.

Our explosive Powderkegs are 10 years old

Whaley Bridge based Powderkegs, the Border Morris  dance group now known all over the High Peak and beyond, celebrates its  tenth anniversary in September with ‘dance outs’ across the region.  The group, famous for bright outfits in explosive colours and blacked out faces, boasts that all its events are free and family friendly.
