Water Weekend gets tidal wave of support

A TIDAL wave of support for the Whaley Water Weekend at the annual general meeting gave the committee a boost as they plan this year’s event on Saturday and Sunday 11 and 12 June.  Two years ago, with the committee down to just two members, the event came close to going under.  At the 2011 AGM, 17 members of the public pledged their support as committee members or supporters with key roles.

Ex-soldier Barry Rudd, newly elected chairman, said:  “We build on the success  created over 12 years.  This new boost of support makes a tremendous difference as we work to give the town an event to be proud of.”

The new secretary is Sam Gray, who has been central to the success of the Whaley Bridge Association.  Eveline Hughes continues as treasurer.

Chris Tetley takes on the key role as stalls co-ordinator.  The committee hopes to have many more stalls this year, to give browsers an even greater choice.

Barrie Walker, former chairman, continues as co-ordinator for the boat trips, a central part of the Water Weekend.  The committee has already pledged to retain free boat trips (last year 1,400 people took a trip.)

James Middleton is sponsorship and fund-raising co-ordinator. Sponsorship and financial support from the local community is running at a higher level than this time last year.

There is now a youth co-ordinator, working with the committee:  Jonathan Carnell.  There are plans for a Friday night ‘special’ to launch the Weekend.
