There will be an organ recital at St James’s, Taxal, at 7.30pm on Saturday 30 October by local organist and music teacher Simon Mercer. His programme, a mix of serious and popular, includes several pieces by Bach. Proceeds will go to Churches Together.
Simon, 46, has been director of music at the King’s School, Macclesfield for a year, finding much to challenge and enjoy. He has given organ recitals in the cathedrals in Arundel, Chichester, Dunkeld, Sheffield and Vienna.
Simon and his wife, Kate, also a Sheffield music graduate, met at university. They live in Whaley Bridge with a variety of dogs.
Simon has had a number of musical posts in the North West: assistant organist at St George’s, Stockport and directing the King Edward Musical Society of Macclesfield and Marple Choral Society.
Simon’s teaching career includes being assistant director of music at Cheadle Hulme School; director of music at St. Ambrose College; and music coordinator at Cheadle and Marple Sixth Form College. He is also head of academic studies and organ tutor at the junior department of the Royal Northern College of Music.
